A virtual private network is a secure network which provides a secure connection over public network like the internet. VPN is used in the Extranets to provide a secure connection between a company and its known remote users.
VPN provides three types of services to make a connection secure between two sites, nodes or devices: Authentication, Privacy, and Integrity. Authentication validates the identities of the two connections. Privacy provides the encryption of the data to make it invisible for the intruders and hence make it secure. Integrity ensures that the data which is being shared between the two peers is not being altered or corrupted.
