| A metropolitan area network has both of the features of LAN and WAN. A MAN can be within a same geographic area with two or more LANs connected for example two different buildings or offices in the same city may be connected to form a MAN. MANs provide high speed connections like 1.544 Mbps and optical services. The optical services includes SONET (Synchronous optical network standard) and SDH (the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy standard).These optical services offers high-speed services like ATM and Gigabit Ethernet and speed ranging into the hundreds and thousands of Mbps. The equipments used to setup Metropolitan area network include end routers, Optical switches and ATM switches. |
